Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Botox for excessive sweating in Glasgow

At GP Matters we provide Botox injections for excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) with effective results by an experienced specialist doctor.

When severe sweating gets in the way of certain daily activities and antiperspirants are not working, you may be a candidate for Botox treatment.
Botox is very effective to treat the symptoms of severe underarm or scalp / head and neck sweating when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough. It is injected into the affected areas to help control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands do not receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

Underarm Sweating:
Prior to the treatment: 48 hrs before the procedure you should shave your armpits.

The day of the treatment you should wash off any deodorant prior to your appointment and you should wear an old top to avoid staining of your favourite top with the iodine dye used to identify the sweat glands.

The actual procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is totally straightforward. A series of small amounts of Botulinum toxin injections are performed at the identified underarm areas through a very fine needle.

Post Treatment
Following the injections, you can resume your daily activities without interruption. Simply avoid touching, rubbing or apply anything (ie. deodorants) on the treated area for 4 hours to prevent infection and spreading of the medicine. Also, it is recommended not to shower on the same day of the treatment or exercise for 24 hours after the procedure. Specific instruction will be given.

Duration
You will get the result at about 72 hours after having the treatment.

Your next treatment can be given when the effects of the first course wear off. This usually happens after 4 to 9 months. Then your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment.
It is recommended to have the treatment every 6 months to receive the best possible results.

The procedure can sometimes be performed on the same day, but for those new to the procedure or that have medical issues, a “cooling-off period” is generally recommended, followed by another scheduled appointment.

What is scalp hyperhidrosis?
Does your scalp sweat a lot? Even when it’s not particularly hot or you’re not working out? Most people sweat when they’re under the sun, working out, or doing something physically strenuous. But if your scalp gets wet and sweaty for no discernible reason, you might be suffering from scalp hyperhidrosis.

We have good news—scalp hyperhidrosis can be easily and effectively treated with Botox.

How Botox Treats Scalp Hyperhidrosis?
Sweating is your body’s natural response to heat and physical exertion because it helps regulate your body temperature, keeping you cool. Your nervous system communicates with your sweat glands to activate your body’s sweat response in the correct situations. Hyperhidrosis is a condition that makes your nervous system go on overdrive, activating the sweat glands even when there’s no external impetus for sweating in the form of physical exertion or heating.

Botox is an effective neurotoxin that blocks communication between muscles and nerve roots. When injected into the correct regions in your scalp, it blocks communication between your sweat glands and the related nerves, preventing your nerves from activating your body’s sweat response. It essentially relaxes the overworked sweat glands to make it stop producing sweat. As such, Botox effectively reduces the symptoms of scalp hyperhidrosis.

Procedure
Dr McAlister will discuss which areas of your face or scalp sweat excessively and if these areas can be treated with Botox. Some parts of the face can’t be treated with Botox. This is because Botox is a muscle relaxant, so if certain muscles are treated this could affect your smile, speech, eating, swallowing and so on.

Common areas that are treated with Botox for sweat reduction include:
- the ‘T’ zone of upper lip, nose and temples
- the scalp and hairline

What happens during the facial sweating treatment?
You will receive the Botox injections through a very fine needle in a simple procedure. It will take 10-15 minutes.
The number of injections you need will depend on:
- the size of your treatment area—Botox injections are usually given one square centimetre apart on the scalp
- how much you sweat—the more severe your hyperhidrosis, the more Botox you will need to treat it

Post Treatment
Following the injections, you can resume your daily activities without interruption. It is recommended not to shower on the same day of the treatment or exercise for 24 hours after the procedure. Specific instruction will be given.

Duration
Most patients notice results after 5 to 7 days, but it may take 2 weeks for the final results to become evident.

It is recommended to have the treatment every 6 months to receive the best possible results.

BOTOX  FOR HYPERHIDROSIS - FAQ

Your sweat glands work when you get a message from the body’s nervous system, if they get too many messages they keep on working and you can sweat excessively. This is called hyperhidrosis; if this happens under your arms it is called axillary hyperhidrosis.

Please do not shave under your arms or use deodorant during the 24 hours prior to your appointment time. Please wear a dark old top to avoid staining of your favourite top with the iodine dye used to identify the sweat glands.

The treatment involves an iodine solution and starch powder being applied to your armpits in order for us to identify the areas that you sweat. This will be followed by a series of small botox injections into the skin. The needles are very fine and the amount injected each time is tiny. Although there is some stinging the whole procedure takes approximately twenty minutes and is not too uncomfortable.

You can resume normal activity immediately after the treatment but please refrain from using deodorant for at least 2/3 days.

Botulinum Toxin, otherwise known as ‘Botox’ is a treatment given by injection into the skin. It is a preparation of protein and when small doses are injected into the skin, it blocks the signals from the nervous system that supply the sweat glands; this stops them working so hard and prevents them from producing so much sweat.

Botox is not a permanent cure and some people may get greater benefit than others. In hyperhidrosis Botox helps to stop or greatly reduce the symptoms. This will usually happen within two weeks of treatment and the effects may last between four and seven months. If you find that this treatment has helped you, it can be repeated, this will give you the greatest benefit.

Most common side effects are: sweating in sites other than armpits, swelling, stinging and pain in the injection site, headache and hot flushes.

Less common: nausea, itching, temporary muscle pain and weakness, joint stiffness, pain in armpits.
